Classes

 

Classes are offered every Monday according to this schedule:

Monday 7PM-8PM: three contemporary classes (Student Center Grand Hall*)

– beginner 1 (teachers: varying)

– beginner 2 (teachers: Ali and Diana)

– intermediate/technique (teachers: Daisy and Daniel from Amaya Dance)

Monday 8PM-830PM: mini social (Student Center Grand Hall*)

Monday 8:30PM-10PM: Rice Salseros performance and training team practice (Student Center Grand Hall*)

Wednesday 10PM-11PM: Rice Salseros training team practice (MPR2, Rice recreational center, building #28 on Rice Campus Map)

Class attendance is open upon payment of the membership fee. The first class is free to everyone. Participation to the performance or training team is included with the club dues and allowed upon auditions. Check the syllabus here: Rice Salseros 2014-2015 Class Syllabus. Beginner 1 

Teachers: rotating

Requirements: None.

This will focus on understanding the musical and timing issues in salsa. There will be a lot of energy put into learning the basic steps of salsa. Different turn patterns will be used to practice basic rhythm skills and reinforce the basics. Introduction to lead and follow will be emphasized. After taking the beginner 1 class, students will be able to understand the beats and rhythms of salsa, dance basic footwork and partner work (CBL, right and left turns) with lead/follow technique, and enjoy club dancing.

Beginner 2

Teachers: Ali and Diana from Rice Salseros

Requirements: basics footowork, CBL, right and left turn. Capability to follow the rhythm.

This class will develop fundamental patterns on the basic CBL and turns: CBL-right, CBL-left, reversed CBL-right and reversed CBL-left, walkthrough. More footwork will be added such as suzie-q, hook step, cuban step. Different combinations will be created with this elements.

Intermediate

Teachers: Daisy Aguilar, Daniel Agosto from Amaya Dance

Requirements: solid knowledge of the Beginner 1 and 2 syllabus. Solid capability to count on the music and follow the beats.

This class will break down technically more advanced fundamental moves such as in-and-out, hammerlock, stop-and-go, swing step, 360. These moves will be combined with the fundamental ones to build more advanced patterns. Styling will be added and more attention will be dedicated to technical execution of patterns. This is the recommended class for performance and training team members or who wish to train to audition for the performance and training team.
